Hazel Cooan, 83

Hazel Cooan, 83, of Elmore, died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at St. Lukes Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth.

A memorial service and visitation will be held at St. Lukes Lutheran Care Center Chapel, 1219 South Ramsey Street in Blue Earth, on Saturday, Oct. 7. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m., with memorial service at 1 p.m. Increment will be at the Elmore Cemetery.

Hazel Lorraine Cooan was born May 14, 1923 in Pilot Grove Township, Faribault County, a daughter of George H. and Alice (Lowery) More. She married William J. Cooan December 12, 1945 at the Methodist Church in Elmore. He preceded her in death in 1994. She was a homemaker and a bookkeeper for many years working at Jones Livestock in Elmore and SEI Inc. in Blue Earth. She was active in the community of Elmore and served as the Justice of the Peace for two terms. Hazel was a member of Elmore United Methodist Church, VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Blue Earth, Ruth Chapter OES #104, Blue Earth and Rose Croix Shrine #13, Mankato. She and her husband were foster parents from 1960-1975, sponsoring 26 children in their care.

She is survived by children, Leslie (Mary) Cooan, Palmetto, GA, Alice (Harold) Spears, Hermitage, TN, Avis (Randy) Richards, Salt Lake City, UT and Willis (Kimberly) Cooan, New Prague; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Joyce Ripley, Winnebago.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Ross More; and two sisters, Bonna Rhoda and Jean Madetzke.
