Heavy rains cause localized flooding

Area residents saw plenty of severe weather on Tuesday, Oct. 4, waking up with a bang from a thunderstorm that struck the area about 6 a.m., and finishing up with a deluge that resulted in standing water in many intersections and low-lying areas of the city, flooding in basements and swollen ditches and creeks.

The morning thunderstorm knocked out power in New Prague for about an hour, and made it interesting for students at New Prague High School and Middle School, where power was out for the first 20 minutes of the school day.

At the height of Tuesday evening’s rainfall, Palmer Welcome Auto, located on Highway 13/21 on the southwestern edge of the city, had people moving cars from the sales lot to higher ground across the street. By the time the storm ended, water was up to the door of the business, and a single car sat in the lot. A drainage ditch along the highway had spilled over and there was standing water along the roadway just south of town.

We’ve had to move the cars before
