Helen Sladek, 97

Helen M. Sladek, 97, of Montgomery, died Monday, July 6, 2009, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.

Born in St. Paul on December 5, 1911, Helen was a daughter of Frank and Anna (Kuzelka) Hruby. The family moved to a farm in Erin Township, Rice County, south of Lonsdale, in 1913. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in New Prague for grades 1-2 while boarding with her maternal grandparents, Joe and Mary Kuzelka, and later graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Lonsdale. She went to work for the summer months at age 12 as a housekeeper in Northfield. She was also a housekeeper at several other homes, including working for Dr. Charles and Ruth Cervenka in New Prague. Helen married Elmer Edward Sladek on November 15, 1938, at Lonsdale. The couple lived on the Sladek farm in Montgomery Township for almost 70 years. She was a farm wife, driving tractors, milking cows and doing daily chores. She cut the farmyard lawn with a self-propelled lawnmower when well into her 90's. She also worked at Green Giant in Montgomery and Spors Co. at Le Center, and was a volunteer cook/waitress at the American Legion in Montgomery for 30 years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning and sewing. Helen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and the CCW.

She is survived by children Norman Elmer Sladek, Edina, Elizabeth Ann Swanson, Mahtomedi and Allen Edward (Dorothy Ann) Sladek, Dundas; grandchildren Theresa (Todd Dale) Sladek, Rebecca (Joshua) Sladek Nowlis, Melissa (Scott Hawxhurst) Sladek and Cindy (David) Rose; five great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; a brother Edward J. Hruby Sr.; sister Evelyn Sevcik; sisters-in-law Lillian Hruby and Adeline Hruby; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992; daughter-in-law Joyce Sladek; son-in-law Gary Swanson; brothers Frank J. and George Hruby; sister Elsie Novak; brothers-in-law Emil Novak, James Sevcik and Edward Cusick; sisters-in-law Ann Hruby and Alvina Cusick; and nephew Edward Hruby Jr.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 10, at the Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery, with Rev. Cory Rohlfing officiating. Readers were Cindy Kay Rose and Dodie Riley. Gift bearers were Rebecca Sladek Nowlis and Melissa Sladek. A eulogy was given by Theresa Sladek.

Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery. Casket bearers were Dale Washa, Douglas Hruby, Douglas McKenzie, David Rose, Todd Dale and Raymond Otto.

Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Arrangements were with the Keohen Memorial Funeral Home in Montgomery.
