Helmberger defeated in New Market Township

An incumbent township supervisor who played a key role in a recent annexation decision in the New Market area was voted out of office Tuesday.

Joel Helmberger, chair of the New Market Township Board, was defeated in his quest for another three-year term by George Silverness in a close contest in New Market Township. Silverness received 177 votes, while Helmberger received 169 votes.

In January, Helmberger and supervisor Harry Anderson voted against the initial request of the New Prague Area Schools and On-Site Marketing to allow annexation of 170 acres west of the City of New Market. The vote was 2-1, with supervisor LeRoy Claussen voting in favor.

In February, the board delayed action on an amended request, for 120 acres, and then last week approved the request, with stipulations regarding the location of the school within the area to be annexed. Both school district and city officials called the stipulations unreasonable
