Herbert J. Loney, age 87
Herbert J. Loney, age 87, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016, at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center. Herbie was born January 14, 1929, in Le Center, MN to Jesse and Gladys (Gritzmacher) Loney. He graduated from Le Center High School and then entered the US Navy, where he served until 1951.
Following his service, he began work as a telephone installer for a telephone/telegraph company in Oregon before returning to Le Center in 1956, where he met his future bride, Dorothy M. Denninger at a dance. The couple married on February 23, 1957 in St. Paul, MN and made their home in South St. Paul. They lived in Mora from 1961-1968 and then in Shakopee until 1987.
Herbie worked for Northwestern Bell/AT&T until retiring in 1985. After retirement, he worked for Rosemount, Inc. for 8 years and finally, after moving to New Prague, worked as a substitute custodian for New Prague School District until 2004, when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Herbie was proud of every job he had!
He belonged to the Legion Club in Le Center and was active in the churches that he belonged to, most recently Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church. He loved fishing, golf, and mowing lawns. Time with his family was his top priority but the outgoing man that he was and someone who could talk to anyone, Herbie loved nothing more than meeting friends for coffee and socializing.
Herb is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Dorothy of New Prague; children, Julie (Jim) Stark of Savage, Jill Loney (Robin McCullough) of Jordan, Jeff of New Prague; grandchildren, Samantha, Sarah, & Caleb; sister-inlaw, Harriet Loney of Le Center. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse & Gladys Loney; brother, Kenneth.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lanesburgh (rural New Prague) with Reverend Henry Koch officiating. Visitation will take place at church from 9:00 to 11:00 AM followed by burial in the church cemetery, where military honors will be conducted. Lunch will follow in the church social hall.
