Higgins-Halloran advance in section tennis tourney

New Prague’s No. 1 doubles team of Teresa Higgins and Tanya Halloran won two matches last week to advance in the Section 2AA playoffs.

The duo entered subsection play last week, defeating Dayal and Friends of Chaska 6-1, 6-2 in the first round and Dahlke and McGuire of Shakopee 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in the second round.

“They had a tough match against a team that played No. 1 and No. 2 singles for Shakopee for much of the season,” said coach Matt Duoos.

The duo lost two matches, to teams from Eden Prairie and Minnetonka, on Monday when they were playing for seeding, and they entered the section championships Wednesday, Oct. 19, as the No. 4 seed from the north, with a 20-3 record. The section championships were held at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Also competing for the Trojans in individual competition, Megan Kubes won her first round match in singles over Ewing of Mound-Westonka, 6-0, 6-1, then lost to Peterson of Orono 6-9, 6-3.

Anna Witty defeated Soundara of Shakopee, 6-3, 6-0, then lost in the second round to Aria Lambert of Minnetonka, 6-0, 6-1.

Sara Kelly and Allie Mahowald lost their first round match to Bornstein and Rademacher of Minnetonka, 6-1, 6-0.

“Both of our singles players won handily in the first round but had some tough opponents in the second round,” Duoos said.

Kubes finished the season with a 12-10 record, while Witty was 7-15 on the year.

Kelly and Mahowald, both seniors, finished their season with a 14-7 record.
