Historical Society serves members with cease and desist demands

Le Sueur County Historical Society (LCHS) is flexing its muscles again. The Society’s  attorney served its 81 members a cease and desist letter on October 26, 2017.

The demand was written by St. Louis Park attorney Jennifer Urban of the firm Legal for Good for the original organization led by Coordinator Kathy Burns. The action attempts to stop members from electing a full board of directors, examining vague financial summaries, opening membership, speaking to the media, and seeking legal representation.

The letter, signed by Urban, was sent either by U.S. mail and email (when available) to the seven individuals elected to the Board of Directors at the October 18 meeting, those who signed the petition for the meeting, and later to the rest of the Society’s 81 members.

It comes after the Society’s tumultuous annual meeting on October 7 at Cleveland City Hall that was halted by a Le Sueur County Deputy Sheriff due to chaos and the end of the time limit for the Society’s reservation with City Hall.

According to Urban, who was not present at the annual meeting, law enforcement “adjourned the meeting based on their perceived threat(s) to public safety”. However, this conflicts with what the deputy told Sheriff Brett Mason.

“My deputies have no authority to make any business ‘adjournment’. I believe the time limit on the room space was up as well … and there was no threat to the public to the best of my knowledge,” Mason said.
