Hometown friends square off on the gridiron

By Lori Nickel, Montgomery Messenger

A love for the game of football is just one thing college students Brian Rud and Michael Jirik have in common. They also both grew up in Lonsdale and became friends through playing baseball in the Lonsdale Little League, the friendships between their families, and through attending church. Brian, son of Tim and Debbie Rud, graduated from Montgomery-Lonsdale High School in 2009 while Michael, son of Paul and Mary Ray Jirik, went to New Prague Area Schools and graduated a year ahead of Brian.

So although the two played sports all through their growing years, they never competed against one another until last Saturday, November 5, in a college football game, with their families seated next to each other in the stands, cheering for them both.

Michael and Brian were offered the opportunity to play in the MIAC Conference right out of high school. Michael, a senior, is a defensive end for the Gustavus Adolphus Gusties, where he is a history major. Brian, a junior, plays offensive tackle for the Augsburg Augies, and he is majoring in accounting.

It's remarkable that two small town Lonsdale boys are playing in a MIAC Conference game against each other
