Hot air balloon crashes in Le Sueur County

A hot air balloon accident in Le Sueur County on Thursday, June 16, sent the balloon's pilot and one of its four passengers to the hospital.

Pilot Edward Chapman, 65, owner of Balloon Ascensions Unlimited of Jordan, was attempting to descend and land his balloon on Le Sueur County Road 32 near 340th Street in Lexington Township. Chapman was forced to land due to increasing winds and the onset of darkness. It was around 9 p.m.

According to Le Sueur County Sheriff's Department, during the descent and landing, the balloon's basket struck the east ditch, causing it to tip and eject Chapman.

The balloon continued in a southwesterly direction with the remaining four passenger in the basket
