Interesting times in New Prague

By Chuck Kajer

A supposed ancient curse says May you live in interesting times. While attributed to the Chinese, there is some dispute as to where this saying actually began.

But we in New Prague are very much living in interesting times. This community continues to grow, and new developments and projects seem to spring up weekly. The city will soon complete work on its Comprehensive Plan, a document to guide growth in New Prague for the future, and construction work will begin for two new elementary schools later this year.

The interesting times can be both a curse and a blessing. As the community continues to grow, it needs to deal with growth-related issues, such as an expanded need for city services.

At the same time, the growth can be a blessing. Growth brings new options and new business opportunities, it brings new people with new talents to the community and it brings a general feeling of optimism.

Change comes to The Times as well. Over the next few months, we’ll be incorporating a few changes in our newspaper. You may have noticed the first one last week. We introduced “Talkin’ to The Times,” a feature where we ask people on the street a question and print their photo and answer. If you see someone approaching you with a camera, don’t run and hide. We just want to know what you think.

Last week, we tried to diversify our sports coverage with a pair of feature stories, one on hockey-playing siblings in the Hrabe and Ambroz families and one on the efforts of Dr. John Berg in running the New Prague Open youth wrestling tournament. The Times will be trying to bring more of the stories behind the sports to you, instead of just giving a game-by-game summary of each sport. We hope it will make for more interesting reading. Let us know if you have any ideas for a sports feature in the future.
