It starts with volunteers

By Chuck Kajer

Saturday is the 24th Annual New Prague Half-Marathon. This is an event that brings in several thousand people to our community. Not only will there be about a thousand runners taking part in the race, as well as several hundred more in the shorter 5K race, but there will also be a lot of family members and friends.

Some of the runners will simply run in the race, rest for awhile at the park and be on their way. Others will stay and visit and hopefully find their way to one of New Prague's stores, restaurants, taverns or coffee shops. New Prague's business community will benefit from these visitors.

If it weren't for a devoted group of people, though, these people wouldn't consider coming to town for the race. That group is the volunteers. Over the course of about seven hours, the course will be marked, refreshment stops will be set up, runners will be registered, officials will watch the race to make sure it is run fairly. During and after the race, medics will be on hand in case there are any medical emergencies, more volunteers hand out snacks to runners and finally, trophies will be awarded. Meanwhile, more people will begin to tear down the course and clean up the park.

The race, like so many other events in the community, depends on volunteers, and New Prague has been very generous in providing volunteers for many events. These people give of their free time and as a result, our community is better off.
