It's time for Dozinky!

Patrick Fisher, Staff Writer

It will be a time of music, food, friends and fun as Dozinky, New Prague's Czech Harvest Festival, takes over Main Street this weekend. People from all over are expected to participate in the community's 22nd annual celebration of its ethnic and agricultural heritage.

Car Cruise Friday

The activities start on Friday evening with the Classic Car Cruise with 400 classic vehicles, 1986 or older, driving along New Prague's Main Street beginning at 6:30 p.m. The street will be closed to traffic as a variety of classic vehicles cruise the downtown area, make their way into the neighboring countryside and then head back into town. After the cruise, owners will be able to park their cars along Main Street to allow people a closer look at the vintage vehicles.

After the cruise, a street dance will be held at 8 p.m. on Central Avenue North. Music will be provided by TRG Productions.

Saturday - The Celebration

Dozinky begins in earnest on Saturday with an assortment of events highlighting the day. Main Street will remain closed allowing people to enjoy the different entertainment, food and merchandise booths.

Stages will be set up at three locations along Main Street for musical entertainment, and strolling musicians will also make the rounds to entertain festival-goers.

Entertainment will also include a petting zoo, corn husking and corn husk dolls by the Scott County Historical Society and the new game Hammerschlagen, where four people try to see who can drive a nail into a log first. There will also be Artists' Alley, displaying the work of area artists and a chance for some hands-on art.

One of the highlights for the day is the Parade of Farm Pride at noon on Main Street. Don and Veda Sirek of New Prague are the Grand Marshals for this year's parade. There will be a variety of floats, organizations, musical groups and farm equipment participating.

There are also sporting events during the day. The annual alumni softball and volleyball tournaments will be held at Memorial Park. The softball tournament begins Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday. Also at the park on Saturday will be water fights between various area fire departments.

The Wells Fargo Variety Show at the New Prague High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. There are 17 unique acts from around the area taking part in the show, offering lots of entertainment.

Sunday - Tours and softball

Parking will not be allowed one block north of Main Street on Central Avenue after 5 p.m. Thursday. In addition, no parking will be allowed one block south of Main on Central Ave. beginning at 10 a.m. Friday.

The Dozinky Classic Car Cruise is Friday, with registration starting at 5 p.m. and food booths opening about the same time. There will be no parking allowed on Main Street beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Main Street will be closed from Scott County Road 37 on the east side to Highway 21 on the west side beginning at 5 p.m., and will reopen Sunday at 6 a.m.

Finally, due to concerns about the safety of people at the street dance on Friday, parking for the classic cars taking part in the cruise has changed this year. After the cruise, the cars will return to New Prague on First Ave. SE. When they reach Main Street, they will be directed east and can park on Main Street going toward Memorial Park.
