James Skluzacek, 91

James Skluzacek, 91, of New Prague, formerly of Jordan, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at the Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.

Born in New Prague on September 11, 1918, Jim was the son of Frank and Agnes (Bouda) Skluzacek. His early years were spent on the family farm in New Prague. Later his father purchased a farm in New Market, where Jim was raised and attended St. Nicholas Catholic School. In 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II. He served in the South Pacific in areas which included New Zealand and the Philippines, where he earned the rank of Sargeant. After his discharge he purchased a farm in the Sand Creek Township area of rural Jordan and worked the farm with his brother, Joe. On April 22, 1947 Jim married Leonella (Lee) Simek at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, and they settled on the farm. He retired in 1983, and in 1987 they moved to New Prague. In his spare time he was an avid reader, loved to play cards, (especially euchre) and no one could beat him at a game of checkers. He was proud of his Czech heritage and never felt it was right for himself or anyone else to work on Sunday.

He is survived by children Mark (Mary) Skluzacek, Jordan, David (Pamela) Skluzacek, Montgomery, Elaine Skluzacek, New Prague and Chris (John) Sorensen, Minneapolis; son-in-law Tom (Jeanne) Schoenbauer; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son Dennis; daughters Patricia and Mary; brothers Frank, Andrew, Joseph, George and Edward; and sisters Sister Menna (Christine), Mary and Josephine.
