James Syltie, 88
James O. Syltie, 88, of Canby, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at Sanford Canby Sylvan Court.
James Oliver Syltie was born May 17, 1921, in Alta Vista Township, Lincoln County, the son of John and Anna (Gilbertson) Syltie. He attended school in Canby and graduated from Canby High School in 1939. He farmed south of Porter and in November 1943, married Dora Popelier at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ivanhoe. They farmed until 1957, when they moved to Canby, where Jim worked at the Phillips 66 gas station and later as a plumber at the Farmer's Co-op. He then helped start CAS Plumbing until he retired in 1985. He enjoyed sports, hunting and camping, and was proud of his family and their accomplishments in life.
He is survived by his wife; children Pat (Allen) Solheid, New Prague, Jim (Kathy) Syltie, Florida, Fletcher (LaVonne) Syltie, Appleton and Winnie Shanabrook, St. Paul; eight grandchildren; 14 great great-grandchildren; a brother Walt Syltie, Porter; sisters Laura Misner, Minneapolis, Agnes Johnson, Minneapolis, Jane (LaVerne) Dahlen, White Bear Lake and Margaret McLellan, Edina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Cora Oehmcke and Ella Blomberg; and a brother Hans Syltie.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, July 25, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Canby, with Rev. Craig Timmerman officiating.
Interment was at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery in Canby. Casketbearers were Stefani Miller, Jessica Trunk, Brad Syltie, Amy Roth, Tyler Syltie, Chad Syltie, Ben Syltie and Alison Shanabrook.
Arrangements were with the Birk Funeral Home in Canby.
