A job well done

To excel as an athlete requires an extraordinary combination of talent and dedication. It also requires the assistance of someone equally as dedicated who is willing to work with you and help you improve your skill level, who will help you focus on your workouts, who will encourage you when you’re down, who will kick you in the butt when you need an extra push, and who is there to offer praise and reinforcement when things are going well.

To win a championship requires a tremendously talented and motivated group of athletes and a dedicated and skilled coaching staff that knows the sport, knows how to work with the athletes to bring out the best in them. For 33 years, New Prague’s gymnastics team has had a succession of outstanding athletes and one common thread going from the early days of the program to now... Matt Shetka.

One could argue that this thread was ripped from the fabric that is the Trojan gymnastics program. That would not be true. If the thread had been ripped from the program, it would have unravelled. Instead, the spirit of Matt Shetka stayed with the team throughout the season. That is a credit to the dedication and talent of the athletes and coaches that were left behind, with Shetka’s values woven into everything the team did.

The team and coaches did something extraordinary in winning a state championship. That they did it under the circumstances they faced this season makes it even more impressive. Congratulations.
