John Heffern, 89

John Robert Heffern, 89,John Robert Heffern, 89, of Heidelberg, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague.

John was born October 8, 1917 at Mower, a son of John Henry and Mande (Johnson) Heffern. He attended school in Mower and served in the U.S. Army from 1941-45. He married Olga Skogstad on July 3, 1953 in Osage, IA. He worked for Interstate Power Co. as a lineman in Grand Meadow until moving to Heidelberg in 1957. He then worked for New Prague Utilities. John enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar and banjo, and gardening.

He is survived by his wife; children, David (Julie), Dennis, NM, Gene (Sandra), AK, Marina Buttler, CO, Douglas (Rose), SD, Patricia (Craig) Stien, SD, Billy John, Heidelberg, Dale, Le Sueur, Gary, SD and Daniel, Heidelberg; a brother, George Heffern, Grand Meadow; a sister, Lucille Tolsted, Ft. Dodge, IA; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Maynard, Dick and Tom Heffern; and a sister, Mary Harrington.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 22 at 10 a.m. at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery, with Rev. Robert Rendahl officiating and military honors provided by the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard. Burial was at the Grand Meadow Cemetery in Grand Meadow.

Visitation was held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery.
