John R. Hertaus, Sr., age 81

John R. Hertaus, Sr., age 81, of New Prague, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Mala Strana Rehabilitation Center. John was born on April 9, 1936, in Cedar Lake Township, Scott County, to Robert W. and Mary E. (Pavek) Hertaus. He grew up in the Veseli area, attended Most Holy Trinity Catholic School and graduated from New Prague High School. He served in the US Army from 1955 – 57 and after military service, married Rita L. Kadlec on October 18, 1958 at Most Holy Trinity Church in Veseli. John farmed the family farm his entire life and also went into carpentry, working for various contractors.

John was a member of the Twin City Carpenters Union, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and Wheatland Sportmen’s Club. He sang in the Most Holy Trinity choir and was a past secretary-treasurer of the Veseli Ball Club. John was an avid fisherman and loved playing cards and there was nothing more enjoyable than a competitive game of Euchre. He enjoyed cooking and was especially noted for his dumplings. His greatest joy, however, was time with his family, especially the grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Family fishing trips provided many great memories. J

ohn is survived by his wife, Rita of New Prague; sons, Christopher (Nancy) Hertaus of Webster, Carl Hertaus of Webster, Craig (Michelle) Pexa Hertaus of Cleveland; daughter-in-law, Joseth Hertaus of Veseli; sister, Elsie Novotny of Shakopee; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; son, John Hertaus, Jr.; sister in infancy.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 10:00 AM at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Veseli with Father John Lapensky officiating. Visitation took place Friday from 4-8 PM and Saturday morning from 7:30 – 9:30 at Bruzek Funeral Home. Military honors were conducted at Holy Trinity Cemetery following Mass and lunch was held at the KC Hall in New Prague.
