John Witt, 73
John W. Jack Witt, 73, of New Prague, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.
Jack was born August 8, 1935, in Belle Plaine Township, Scott County, a son of Cletus and Bertha (Busch) Witt. He was a lifelong resident of the New Prague area, and attended the Union Hill School and New Prague High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Jack married Darlene Mae Schoenbauer on December 29, 1956, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague. He was a dairy farmer from 1956 to 1985 and worked as an agricultural inspector for Scott County for 15 years. He was a Third and Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the Helena Township Board and New Prague Rural Fire Association Board. He was also a member of the Township Officers Association and the New Prague Planning & Zoning Commission.
He is survived by his wife; children Barb (Jerry) Kavan, Le Center, Doug (Brenda) Witt, New Prague, Peg Witt (and Pete Shuster), Northfield, Ann Witt, New Prague, John (Christine) Witt, River Falls, WI, Catherine (Steve) Rupp, Hopkins and Mary (Mark) Bartusek, New Prague; 21 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; extended family Jeanette (Ambrose) Becker, Claude Witt, Ken (Lana) Witt, Kathleen (Eric) Perry, Beverly Witt (and Gregg Haskel), Mary (Paul) Martin, Jeanette Deutsch, Arnie (Ann) Schoenbauer, Roger (Jo Ann) Zaun, Gene (Dorothy) Illg and David (Elaine) Price.
He was preceded in death by sons Dennis and Marty Witt; grandson Martin Shuster; and his parents.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m., at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, with Rev. Kevin Clinton officiating.
Interment will be at the St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in New Prague. Pallbearers will be Stefan Kavan, Eugen Kavan, Tyler Witt, Simon Shuster, Hannah Jayne, Samuel Witt, Isaac Witt and Adam Bartusek.
Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague. Parish wake prayers were held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
