Julia Bates Nelson, 89
Julia Bates Nelson, 89, of New Prague, died Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at her home.
Julia was born January 27, 1924, in New Prague, a daughter of Thomas F. and Pauline (Jelinek) Rybak. She attended St. Wenceslaus School, New Prague High School and a business college in Minneapolis. She married Frank C. Bates on June 10, 1947, in New Prague, and following his death she married Warren J. Nelson on April 29, 1977, also in New Prague. Julia was a seamstress, was a secretary at Northwest Airlines, office manager for Dr. Wayne Hines, and worked in the business office at Queen of Peace Hospital. She was a member of bridge clubs and the St. Wenceslaus CCW, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the hospital. Julie enjoyed arts projects, cookie baking, knitting, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family and her community.
She is survived by children Cheryl Bates (and Steve Kupetz), Minneapolis, Therese (Dave) Loomis, Toledo, OR, and Dugan (Anna) Bates, Stevenson, WA; stepchildren Stephanie Vincent and John Warren Nelson, both of Luck, WI; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband on December 5, 1971; her second husband on September 7, 2012; a son Thomas C. Bates; her parents; and four siblings Thomas Rybak, Lawrence Rybak, George Rybak, and Pauline Rybak.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 8, at 11 a.m., at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague, with Rev. Kevin Clinton officiating.
Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in New Prague. Urnbearer was grandson Gustaf Kupetz.
Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
