Julia Malecha, 93

Julia Malecha, 93, Northfield, died Monday, January 31, 2011, at the Reflections Unit of Three Links Care Center in Northfield.

Julia Marie Malecha was born August 26, 1917, on the family farm in Wheatland Township near Veseli. The daughter of Joseph and Anna (Palma) Simon was baptized and confirmed at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Veseli and attended the Veseli Parochial School. Following school Julia remained at home on the farm helping her parents.

On October 22, 1940, she married Joseph T. Malecha at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Veseli. Their first home was on their farm where they raised their two children and farmed for 28 years.

In 1968 they sold their farm and moved to their longtime home in Northfield. Joe worked at the Northfield Foundry, and in 1969 Julia began working at Northfield Senior High School as a cook until 1978. She later worked at the Northfield Retirement Center for a few years in housekeeping.

Julia and Joe always had a large garden which always involved a lot of canning. The couple enjoyed their summer cabin for 20 years, first on French Lake for seven years and on Roberts Lake for the next 13 years. During retirement they took numerous Bus Tours throughout the U.S. and visited all but four states. They also traveled to Europe, Hawaii, and Mexico.

Playing cards was a favorite pastime for Julia as well as visiting with friends and being with her family.

Julia is survived by children son Ronald Malecha, Blooming Prairie, daughter Karen Sevcik, Lonsdale; sister Janet Kocina, New Prague; sister-in-law Marion Malecha of Apple Valley; grandchildren Kevin Malecha, Jennifer (Dave) Kriske, Scott (Lisa) Sevcik, Lisa (Bruce) Skluzacek, and great-grandchildren Tyler, Brookelyn, and Tanner Skluzacek, and Courtney, Jacob, and Madyson Sevcik.
