Le Center American Legion to hold dinner/auction for disabled vets

Le Center American Legion Post #108 will be holding a Rib Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, Feb. 18, from 5 to 8 p.m., with proceeds to benefit disabled veterans at Veterans on the Lake Resort in Ely.

Veterans on the Lake is a non-profit resort which has been in existence for 20 years. It is a barrier-free facility where priority is given to disabled veterans. Veterans on the Lake is not affiliated with the Veterans Administration or any veterans organization, and there is no government subsidy. Disabled veterans account for 92 percent of the guests who stay at the resort.

Veterans on the Lake was founded in 1982 by a group of citizens (mostly veterans) from Northeastern Minnesota. The first day of operation was May 13, 1983, with grand opening festivities being the Governor’s Fishing Opener and the St. Cloud Vets Fishing Trip. The not-for-profit facility is operational by donations, fundraisers and user fees.

“There is such a deep personal satisfaction in knowing that we are helping the disabled veteran return to the great outdoors,” said Sheri Neubarth, business manager at the resort, “especially in light of the fact that the number one requested outdoor activity of the disabled veteran is fishing.”

There is a charge for the dinner, and it is open to the public.

Reservations for the dinner, featuring southwestern style ribs, baked potato, vegetable and rolls, should be made at the Le Center American Legion Club, 507-357-4787.

For further information about the event or to make a donation for the silent auction, contact Legionnaire Don Hayden at 507-357-6737.
