Le Sueur Co. Board approves sheriff's requests, hiring of personnel

Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners approved two requests made by Sheriff Dave Gliszinski and approved the hiring of two staff members at the recommendation of Personnel Coordinator Cindy Westerhouse as part of its agenda for the Tuesday, Sept. 18 meeting.

The sheriff asked permission to accept an alcohol state grant in the amount of $1,280, to be used for alternative enforcement such as compliance checks. His second request was for approval to accept the low bid of Sunup Construction of Madison Lake in the amount of $9,171 for a chain link fence to be installed near the county highway department building. The 50x100 fenced area will provide space for vehicles which have been confiscated following arrests or accidents. The sheriff said funds to finance the much-needed facility will come from the drug task force and the DWI vehicle seizure fund.

The personnel coordinator recommended the hiring of Renee L. Moravec as an office assistant in the community health/public health department effective September 24, and Erica Miller as an office assistant in the human services department effective October 1.

Also at Tuesday's meeting

• The board received a preliminary budget levy increase survey from County Coordinator Peggy Donovan, showing Le Sueur County's levy increase as the lowest (4.206 percent) among several Minnesota Valley counties including Watonwan (9.5 percent), Waseca (10.9), Sibley (4.22), Rice (7.9), Nicollet (9.75), Martin (9.24), Faribault (6.9), Brown (9.97) and Blue Earth (11).

• Sue Rynda, human services director and John Glisczinski, fiscal officer, gave their monthly report of activity in their department, using charts and graphs for monthly/yearly comparisons.

• The board approved a recommendation by Jim McMillen, building maintenance engineer, to accept the low bid of Javens Mechanical, Mankato, to repair a leak in the cooling tower on the courthouse in the amount of $1,325.

• Coordinator Donovan gave an update on the license bureau relocation project. The plan is to move the bureau to the auditor/treasurer area of the courthouse on October 24. The county coordinator and personnel coordinator will be moving into the space currently occupied by the license bureau. Primary reasons for the move are greater security for license bureau funds and staff and increased privacy for the coordinators.
