Le Sueur Co. Board holds ditch hearings

Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners held public hearings on three ditch liens and one levy against property owners at its regular meeting held Tuesday, May 22 at the courthouse in Le Center.

County Auditor Ron Germscheid, who deals with the ditch systems in Le Sueur County, presented recommendations on four ditches, with the liens and levies intended to put the individual ditches in better financial position. Such actions have been encouraged by the state auditor's office each year.

-County Ditch #59 (Elysian Township), a 100 percent lien for seven years at 5 percent interest, raising $64,103 for the seven mile waterway. Bob Selly of Selly Construction and Roger Ruhland of the SWCD made comments pertaining to the ditch, where there have been some problems. Germscheid said there are 96 landowners on this system.

-County Ditch #36 (Cordova and Elysian Townships), a 20 percent levy (no recent lien) for one year at 5 percent interest, raising $1,181 for the four mile system.

-County Ditch #57 (Kilkenny Township), a 100 percent lien for five years at 5 percent interest, raising $8,884 for the one mile system.

-County Ditch #17 (Cordova Township), 75 percent lien for three years at 5 percent interest, totaling $1,805 for the ditch system consisting of one mile in length.

The county board approved Germscheid's recommendations.
