Le Sueur Co. officials give up raises

By Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board accepted a resolution submitted by County Auditor Ron Germscheid to give up his 2009 pay increase due to consequences of the stagnated economy.

Similar resolutions were also accepted at the regular commissioners' meeting on Tuesday, March 24, from Commissioners Bob Culhane and John Grimm , requesting that their salaries for 2009 be reduced to the 2008 level.

The commissioners also considered two applications for conditional use permits (CUPs) and acted on several personnel items.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Kathy Brockway presented the CUP applications, which were both after-the-fact permits since work was already underway, requiring payment of additional fees:

-John Tapper, Rosemount (applicant/owner), a CUP to allow a guesthouse in a Recreational Residential District on a Recreational Development Lake (German), in Elysian Township. Approved 5-0.

-Southern Minnesota Animal Rescue Team Inc. (S.M.A.R.T.), Montgomery (applicant), Mark Jindra, Le Center (owner), a CUP to allow applicant to operate an animal rescue facility in an Agricultural District of Lexington Township. The board discussed the operation with Chuck Devito of S.M.A.R.T., and since there were several unanswered questions, moved to refer back to planning and zoning for further consideration and more clarity on a business plan, number of animals, wastewater, etc.

Personnel Coordinator Cindy Westerhouse recommended several actions, all approved by the board:

-Approve revised Le Sueur County Personnel Policy.

-Hire Beth Hewitt, part-time family home visitor in public health department.

-Accept Joan Bindner's resignation as a social worker in human services.

-Hire Salli Derner as a temporary office assistant in the veterans service office.

Other actions:

• The board received a zoning ordinance revision update from Jamie Swenson of the I & S Group (architects-engineers-planners) of Mankato. A work session will be scheduled for April.

• Sheriff Dave Gliszinski was given permission to apply for a COPS Grant to hire a new officer for three years, with 100 percent funded by the stimulus program.

Next meeting April 14

Next meeting of the county board is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14.
