Le Sueur County Board adopts preliminary budget and levy

By Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners adopted the preliminary 2009 budget and tax levy and approved a resolution to sell capital improvement plan bonds at an excellent rate during its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9 at the courthouse in Le Center.

Tax levy at 6.194%

County Auditor Ron Germscheid and Budget Officer Carol Blaschko presented the figures and information on the budget and proposed levy for 2009. Following discussion and adjustments, the board adopted a proposed levy of $12,478,688, representing an increase of 6.194 percent over the 2008 final levy of $11,750,808.

Germscheid said the levy amount would exempt Le Sueur County from holding the Truth In Taxation Public Hearing in December, saving the county anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 in necessary expenses. The adjustment to reach the maximum allowable for exemption from the hearing came from using reserve funds, as explained by Germscheid.

We (Germscheid and Blaschko) are giving you (board) the option of using some reserve funds to reach the maximum allowable to be exempt from holding the hearing and saving several thousand dollars
