Le Sueur County Board denies billboard permit

Jake Keohen, Montgomery Messenger

The Le Sueur County Board of Commissioners denied a permit for a billboard in Tyrone Township by a 4-1 vote during its regular meeting Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the courthouse in Le Center.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Kathy Brockway presented the following recommendation for board action: Lincoln Outdoor Advertising, Burnsville (applicant), Jake Fretty, Jordan (owner), request that the county grant a Conditional Use Permit to allow applicant to construct a billboard in a Business District of Tyrone Township (Highway 169 near McGraw Monument north of Le Sueur).

The county planning commission had recommended approval of the application as written.

Following board discussion of visibility and safety concerns, Commissioner Bob Culhane moved for approval, but the motion died for lack of a second. A motion to deny the application because of safety concerns was approved 4-1, with Culhane voting against the denial.

Also under Brockway's agenda, the board awarded a contract for zoning and subdivision ordinance revisions to the I & S Group (architects, engineers, planners, land surveyors and scientists) of Mankato and Faribault in the amount of $50,720. There were three other bidders for the project.

Also on Tuesday:

• Highway Engineer Darrell Pettis gave his monthly report of department activity and future planning. As part of his agenda, a detour agreement with MnDOT District 6 for Highway 60 work next spring was approved, and a price quote of $11,479 for three furnaces in the county shop at Montgomery was accepted from Ruhland Electric of Montgomery.

• Dennis Hausman of Federal Engineering and County Jailer Larry Sycks discussed a coming study and recommendation concerning county radio infrastructure to meet the federal mandate which will be in place in 2013.

• Unimin Minnesota Corporation representatives Grey Lusty and Chuck Collins gave their annual reports on Kasota and Ottawa mining operations. Demand remains strong and shipments are up for both plants
