Legion goes 6-0, edges past No. 1 Burnsville

The New Prague Post 45 American Legion baseball team concluded another week with three wins moving their record to 6-0.

The team won a doubleheader against Hastings in an away game with scores of 4-3 and 9-5 on Tuesday, June 11. Then on Sunday, June 16, New Prague won 5-4 at home against Burnsville, ranked number one in state polls.

New Prague was at Red Wing on Monday, June 17, scores were unavailable before this issue of The Times went to press. Post 45 also faced Lakeville on Tuesday, June 18, and was scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. home game on Wednesday, June 26, against Red Wing.

Post 45 4, Hastings 3 Hunter Piehl tossed a complete game and kept hitters off balance to record a 4-3 victory, he struck out nine Hastings batters. Piehl, Jake Klein, and Cody Shimota recorded two hits each and Nathan Olson totaled two RBI’s in the game. New Prague took a three run lead into the bottom of the seventh, Hastings scored two runs in the inning and the final out was recorded on a run-down between home and third base.

Post 45 9, Hastings 5 In the nightcap Shimota collected three hits, sparking Post 45 Legion to a 9-5 victory in seven innings over Hastings. He singled in the third and fourth innings and tripled in the sixth inning. Auggie Isaacson, Paul Hentges, Cullen Smith and Olson all collected two hits in the 13-hit attack. Reliever Danny Beckius shut down Hastings while he was on the hill. Hastings managed just two hits off of the Post 45 pitcher, who allowed one earned run, walked four and struck out seven during his four innings of work.

Post 45 5, Burnsville 4 Post 45 and Burnsville traded the lead four times on Sunday, but Post 45 ended up on top with a 5-4 win in seven innings over Burnsville. Post 45 finally managed to grab the lead after a strong fourth inning. Post 45 went up for good on a two-run double by Brok Schwartzkopf bringing home Joey Schouviller and Isaacson. Schwartzkopf racked up three RBIs on two hits for Post 45. Daniel Feneis was a workhorse on the bump while bagging the win for New Prague. Feneis allowed two earned runs, six hits and no walks while striking out five over seven innings of work. Post 45 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Cody Shimota singled to ignite New Prague's offense. Schwartzkopf singled, plating Joe Heinz. Post 45 scored two runs in the second inning, and then followed it up with two more in the fourth. In the second, New Prague scored on an RBI double by Schouviller, scoring Piehl.
