Legion team off to 3-0 start

The New Prague American Legion baseball team is off to a 3-0 start after one week of play.

The team opened by sweeping a doubleheader from St. Paul Park, 11-2 and 13-0, on Tuesday, June 4. They defeated Northfield 4-3 in an exciting game on Monday, June 10.

The 45s were scheduled to travel to Hastings on Tuesday, June 11, then will host Burnsville on Sunday, June 16.

The team, is coached by Rick Bell.

Post 45 11, St. Paul Park 2 Daniel Feneis pitched seven innings and allowed just six hits and two runs as New Prague defeated St. Paul Park 11-2 in the first game of a doubleheader.

New Prague had two hits each from Auggie Isaacson, Joe Heinz, Brok Schwartzkopf and Ben Miller. Miller had three RBIs and Cody Shimota had two.

Post 45 13, St. Paul Park 0 Miller and Paul Hentges combined for a three-hit shutout as New Prague defeated St. Paul Park 13-0 in five innings.

Heinz went 3-for-4 and Schwartzkopf and Danny Beckius had two hits each. Schwartzkopf and Nate Olson both doubled.

Post 45 4, Northfield 3 With the scored tied and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, Schwartzkopf lined a hard shot down the third base line that the Northfield third baseman knocked down, but he had trouble picking up the ball and was not able to make the throw home in time to retire the runner as New Prague defeated Northfield 4-3.

Jake Klein had started the inning with a base hit, then Isaacson and Shimota both had bunt singles to load the bases. After Paul Hentges hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Klein at home, Schwartzkopf brought home Isaacson with the winning run.

New Prague scored their other three runs in the fourth inning, with Schwartzkopf driving in the first run on a double. He later scored on a passed ball and Hunter Piehl had a sacrifice fly to bring home Danny Beckius.

Feneis pitched a complete game, allowing just five hits and striking out five.

Schedule

New Prague will play an 18-game schedule against other Third District teams from Dakota, Goodhue, Rice and Carver counties. The Sub-state playoffs will begin July 24.
