Legion team wins play-in game

The New Prague American Legion Post 45 baseball team defeated Faribault 7-5 on Monday, July 18, in a play-in game to advance to the Sub- State tournament, which was scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 20, in New Ulm.

New Prague, the No. 8 seed, was scheduled to play Mankato National (West) at 10 a.m. at Johnson Park. Win or lose, Post 45 returns to New Ulm Thursday in the double-elimination tournament. If they win they play at 1:30 p.m Thursday in Johnson Park. If they lose, their game will be at 1 p.m. at Mueller Park. Their second round opponent will either be Mankato American (East) or Worthington.

The other bracket in the tournament has New Ulm facing Fairmont and Jordan taking on Sleepy Eye in the opening round.

A third round game will also be played on Thursday, if New Prague wins either of its first two games.

The tournament continues with games on Friday and Saturday. The winner advances to the 2016 State American Legion Tournament, which is hosted by Delano.

Last week, New Prague concluded its regular season with a pair of losses, to New Ulm and Chanhassen.

New Ulm 18, New Prague 10 New Prague overcame a 7- 0 deficit and tied the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but let things get away from them in the final two innings of an 18-10 loss at New Ulm Tuesday, July 12. Post 45 scored three runs in the first inning. Jack Becker singled and Jack Krouse walked, then Bridger Hahn singled to bring in two runs. Logan Reger’s base hit gave Post 45 its third run. In the fifth inning, New Prague saw its first eight batters reach base, with one of them being retired on a force play. That allowed them to tie the game at 10-10. Brady O’Neill, Will Forberg, Ian Cameron and Noah Wicklander, Bridger Hahn and Reger each had base hits. However Post 45 couldn’t get the lead run in and New Ulm scored three times in the sixth and five more in the seventh to take the win. Hahn started and went 3-1/3 innings. Becker pitched 2-2/3 innings and took the loss.

Chanhassen 5, New Prague 1 New Prague lost its regular season finale at home Friday, July 15. Chanhassen scored twice in the first inning and kept Post 45 off the scoreboard until the final inning, when Wicklander doubled and scored on an error. Wicklander started and took the loss, with Cal Bartyzal, Will Forberg and Jack Krouse all pitching in relief.

New Prague had just four hits, with Luke Zweber getting two of those.
