Leo Malecha, 89

Leo W. Malecha, 89, of Punta Gorda, FL, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012. He was born July 17, 1923, in Northfield, lived and raised his family in Excelsior, and moved to Punta Gorda in 1995. Leo was a WWII Marine Corps veteran, serving in the Pacific Theater. He was an active member of the Marine Corps League, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus and the Masons. He enjoyed traveling, gardening and spending time with family. He is survived by his second wife Lorraine; children Margaret (Ken) Oberg, Barrington, IL, Patricia (Apolo) Gonzalez, Carrollton, TX, Michael (Tammy) Bradford, NH, and James (Linda), Austin, AR; grandchildren Jason (Sara) and Christine Oberg, David (Melissa) and Daniel Gonzalez, Zachary and Nicholas Malecha and Jarrid Erwin; two greatgrandchildren Kevin Gonzalez and Sebastian Oberg; a brother Alois, AZ, and a sister Lillian Fanelli, NV. He was preceded in death by his first wife Adeline M. (Tikalsky) Malecha; and a sister Rita Hosford, RI. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m., at Windmill Village in Punta Gorda. An additional memorial will be held Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at the American Legion in Lonsdale from 1 to 4 p.m. Burial including full military honors will be held at 9 a.m., Monday, Jan. 21, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Arrangements are with Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, Punta Gorda. Memorial may be made to the Toys for Tots Foundation of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve at toysfortots.org/donate.
