Leora Zelmer, 83
Leora Margaret Zelmer, 83, of Kilkenny, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at the Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, WY.
Born May 10, 1924 in Richards, IA, Leora was a daughter of Hiram Hie and Ernestina Tina (Gerbracht) Onnen. She attended country school, graduated from high school in Jolley, IA in 1942 and majored in business at Wartburg College in Iowa. She returned to the family farm during World War II as her brothers were serving their country. Leora married Herbert Zelmer on May 20, 1956, in Pomeroy, IA, after which they moved to Kilkenny. She served as Kilkenny city clerk and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and St. John's Women of the Church. Leora enjoyed playing cards.
She is survived by a daughter Kristine (Larry) Oolman, Laramie, WY; two sons Paul (Mary) Zelmer, Montgomery and Dave (Deb) Zelmer, Sioux Falls, SD; brother Ivan Onnen, Omaha, NE; sister Vera Onnen, Manson, IA; and seven grandchildren Adam, Ryan, Cody, Hannah and Shellby Zelmer and Matthew and Kathleen Oolman.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister, Loretta Archer; and two brothers, Orvile and Harold Onnen.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Kilkenny, with Rev. Jack Dahl officiating. The Kilkenny American Legion Auxiliary attended in a group.
Burial was at the Sabre Lake Cemetery in Kilkenny. Pallbearers were Adam, Ryan and Cody Zelmer, Dennis Onnen, Matthew Oolman and Gene Mach.
Visitation was held Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
