Lillian Mellen, 78

Lillian Mellen, 78, of Montgomery, died Thursday, Nov. 18 at her home.

Born in England on March 7, 1926, Lillian Mabel Mellen was a daughter of Charles Albert and Mary (Coles) Coles. She attended school in England and married Manley Y. Mellen on March 18, 1946 in York County, England. They moved to Montgomery from England in 1948 and she worked as a seamstress at Munsingwear in Montgomery for 20 years. She enjoyed gardening, having tea, knitting, collecting memorabilia, playing cards and dice, watching birds and spending time with her family.

Lillian is survived by two sons, Mike (Gay) Mellen of Elk River and Marty (Muriel) Mellen of Waterville; five daughters, Marlene (Ken) Smisek of St. Peter, Majel Enberg of Long Lake, Margery Novotny of New Prague, Mary (Marvin Jr.) Jakes of Montgomery and Melinda (Greg) Vlasak of Montgomery; two sisters, Margaret Watson and Joan Woodhouse; two brothers, Albert and Frederick Coles; 27 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Michelle Mellen; a son, Mahlon, in infancy; and a sister, Dorothy Glassett.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Montgomery, with Rev. Robert Rendahl officiating. Interment was at St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Montgomery. Pallbearers were Jake Mellen, Adam Vlasak, Jesse Schroeder, Jeremy Jakes, Jason Novotny and Abe Mellen. Honorary pallbearers were Mitchell Mellen, Nicholas Enberg and Clinton Vlasak.

Visitation was held Saturday, Nov. 20 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery, with an American Legion Auxiliary service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation was also held for one hour prior to the service at church on Sunday.
