Local man dies while vacationing in Canada

Denny Turek, 60, of New Prague, drowned while whitewater rafting in Invermere, British Columbia, near Banff, Canada, on Thursday, July 19.

The accident happened while he was riding the rapids with his grandson and his two daughters, according to a family member.

In strong currents, Turek's raft capsized in water that was unusually high and faster than normal due to heavy rains the night before.

He had been vacationing with his wife Janet, two of his daughters, a son-in-law and four grandchildren. They were on the last leg of their trip, which began the previous Thursday, July 12. A complete obituary appears on the July 19 edition of The New Prague Times.
