Lonsdale and Prior Lake gain Region 3C tourney with wins in D-R-S White playoff

The Lonsdale Aces and Prior Lake Mudcats won in the Dakota-Rice-Scott League's White Division best-of-three playoffs last week and are now competing in the Region 3C tournament this week.

Lonsdale won two straight games over New Prague and Prior Lake took the last two games of a best-of-three series to gain region play.

Tuesday, July 25

Lonsdale 4, New Prague 2

The Aces won the first game of their best-of-three series with the Orioles at Trenda Memorial Field as they got at least one hit in every inning and defeated New Prague, 4-2.

Lonsdale had a 12-hit attack, led by Brian Vosejpka, Tony Altavilla, Chad and Brad Vosejpka with two hits apiece.

Brian Vosejpka put Lonsdale on the board with a leadoff home run in the second inning. In his next turn at bat, he led off with a double in the fourth and scored on Paul Tisdel's double after a sacrifice bunt by Mike Kalina. Tisdel was driven in by Kyle Kalina's single.

The Aces added an insurance run in the eighth inning as Mark Smisek drew a leadoff walk, advanced on a bunt and wild pitch and scored on Chad Vosejpka's single.

New Prague had its chances with runners in scoring position in four different innings.

Chad Skluzacek doubled to left with one out in the sixth and scored on Andy Shetka's single.

In the visitors' eighth, Dan Shetka walked after one out, stole a base, advanced on a two-out error, and scored on Ted Nytes' single to left.

Bryant Havlicek and Adam Gosch got the other two Oriole hits.

Andrew Vlasak was the starting and winning pitcher with Brian Vosejpka facing the last four batters.

Montgomery 4, Prior Lake 0

Playing at Memorial Field, the Mallards shut out the visiting Prior Lake Mudcats, 4-0, in the best-of-three series opener between the two teams.

Josh Kuchinka pitched a one hit game, a single by B.J. Benz in the seventh inning.

Three of the four runs scored were unearned.

The Mallards took a 2-0 lead in the first when Christian Anderson was safe on an error, and Nick Worm, Dale Lapic and Chris Ziskovsky hit singles.

In the third inning the sequence was almost the same. Anderson was hit by a pitch, Worm singled, Lapic bunted and was safe on an error, a run scoring, and Ziskovsky singled for what was the final run.

Friday, July 28

Lonsdale 11, New Prague 0 (7 inn.)

The Aces moved out in front in the very first inning, scoring three runs on four hits, a pair of walks and an error.

Eleven batters went to the plate in the sixth inning when Lonsdale put this game at New Prague out of reach with seven runs on seven hits.

Lonsdale's leading batters were Tony Altavilla and Brian Vosejpka with three hits each and Mike Jirik with two singles. Derek Vosejpka hit a two-run single during the seventh.

Jirik and Brian Vosejpka combined to hold the Orioles to only one hit, a single by Mike Cervenka.

A leadoff double in the fifth inning by Brian Vosejpka was the only extra-base hit. Vosejpka was the winning pitcher as New Prague's season came to an end.

A two-run homer to right center by the Mudcats' B.J. Benz provided all the offense needed as Prior Lake defeated the Mallards at Veterans Field, 2-0.

The hits were scarce for both teams.

Manager Greg Faue hit two singles for the winners and Nick Worm had two for Montgomery.

Josh Kuchinka and Bert Westerman hit eighth-inning singles for the Mallards.

Chris Ziskovsky struck out 16 Prior Lake batters and Jake Schmidt, the winning pitcher, fanned 11.

Sunday evening, July 30

Prior Lake 8, Montgomery 5

A run-scoring, first-inning double by Greg Faue, a two-run double by Justin Schliep, two-run single by Levi Schneider and a four-run third inning were the difference in this deciding game at Memorial Field, Montgomery, won by the Mudcats, 8-5.

Prior Lake was never behind although the Mallards stayed within reach most of the game.

Andy Hanson was the winning pitcher in relief, striking out five in just over six innings and yielding runs in the seventh and ninth.

B.J. Benz had two hits for Prior Lake.

Christian Anderson led Monty with three hits including a ninth inning double and Bert Westerman hit a triple in the seventh and scored three runs. Dale Lapic hit a first-inning double.

Region 3C pairings:

Wednesday, Aug. 2, 8 p.m. - Prior Lake at Cannon Falls; Hampton vs. St. Benedict at Miesville. Elko and Lonsdale get first round byes.

Friday, Aug. 4, 8 p.m. - Elko vs. Cannon Falls - Prior Lake winner, field to be determined; Hampton-St. Benedict winner vs. Lonsdale. If Hampton won Wednesday, game is at Lonsdale, if St. Benedict won Wednesday, it's their choice of field.

Sunday, Aug. 6 - 2 p.m. - One winner's bracket game and two loser's bracket games to be played. Teams and fields to be determined by previous results.

The region tourney continues with one game Wed., Aug. 9, one on Fri., Aug. 11 and the championship game on Sun., Aug. 13, 2 p.m., with a second game, if needed, to follow.

Lonsdale draftees are Chris Ziskovsky and Dale Lapic of Montgomery. Prior Lake selected Bert Westerman of Montgomery and Chad Skluzacek of New Prague.
