Lonsdale approves waste removal contract

Lori Nickel, Montgomery Messenger

A contract between the City of Lonsdale and Waste Management (WM) will go into effect following approval by the Lonsdale City Council at its Thursday, March 25 meeting.

The five-year garbage contract had been discussed at a previous council meeting, when councilors would not agree to language stating the rates could be increased up to four percent each year. They asked that rates go no higher than two percent annually.

The revised contract was reviewed Thursday evening, which included the change asked for by the council. It states that rates shall be increased by two percent annually, beginning on April 1, 2011. However, increases due to fuel costs could also raise rates up to five percent higher, depending on whether or not diesel fuel goes above $3 per gallon and beyond (as calculated by the Department of Energy National Average for Weekly Retail for the midwest).
