Lonsdale man trapped in grain bin

John Kalina, 54, of rural Lonsdale was rescued from a corn bin on his farm around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26. Rescue workers were called to the farm, on Jackson Avenue south of Veseli and northwest of Lonsdale in Rice County, shortly before 10 a.m. Crews from the Lonsdale, New Prague and Faribault fire departments were involved in the rescue. According to Rice County Sheriff Richard Cook, Kalina was trying to loosen some corn from the top of the bin when he fell in and was buried up to his neck. Cook said after being rescued, Kalina was examined by paramedics. His vital signs were good and he refused to be taken to a hospital. North Memorial Ambulance of New Prague and the Lonsdale Police Department also were on the scene.
