Lorraine Backes, 85

Lorraine G. Backes, 85, of Albert Lea, died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Lorraine Gladys Backes was born January 18, 1922, in Lake Crystal, the daughter of Hugh and Julia (Shaw) Lewis. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School and then worked as a telephone operator. Lorraine married Victor A. Backes on May 9, 1946, in Belle Plaine. They had lived in Belle Plaine, Marshall and New Prague before making their home in Albert Lea in 1957. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and was an avid Twins baseball fan. The highlight of her 80s was getting to the Metrodome to see her Twins play. Her life was based on caring for her family. She also enjoyed volunteering as a teacher's helper at the Christian School in Wells. Lorraine had been living with her daughter, Linda, in Wells for the past few months.

She is survived by three children,

Judy (Dennis) Smith, Albert Lea, Linda (Duane) Penning, Wells, and Steve (Cary) Backes, Crockett, CA; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alvera Anonson, Stillwater, and Frances Spielman, Shakopee; sisters-in-law, Louise Hammerlindl, St. Paul, and Teresa Beckius, Jordan; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986; one brother and two sisters.

The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at the First Lutheran Chapel in Albert Lea, with the Rev. John Holt officiating. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Bonnerup Funeral Service, and one hour before the service at the church.
