Man gets 10 years in hit-and-run death

A Farmington man was sentenced to 10 years in prison after being convicted of killing a New Prague High School graduate in a hit-and-run crash last fall.

Matthew K. Hartley, 34, was sentenced Tuesday, May 9, in Scott County District Court. On September 25, 2016, he was driving a motorcycle that struck and killed 24-year-old Mollie Mahowald, who was standing on the side of the road. At the time, Hartley had a revoked driver’s license after a drunk driving conviction just two months earlier and had another drunk driving charge pending. In addition, his motorcycle operator’s permit had expired earlier that year.

Hartley will serve about six years in prison, including time already served, for Mahowald’s death, before he is eligible for release.

Hartley was convicted in February on three counts of criminal vehicular homicide, and was acquitted on a charge that he was under the influence when he struck Mahowald.

Mahowald was waiting for a ride home from her sister after bar closing in Elko New Market at the time she was hit. Her sister arrived....
