Marcella Witt, 95

Marcella M. Witt, 95, of New Prague, died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague.

M a r c e l l a was born April 20, 1917, in Helena Township, Scott County, a daughter of Louis and Mary (Pavlicek) Svobodny. She was raised in New Prague, attended St. Wenceslaus School, and also lived at Lonsdale and Le Center. She worked as a kitchen aide at Community Memorial Hospital in New Prague, and as a nursing assistant at Mala Strana. Marcella married Fred Witt on June 11, 1940, in New Prague. She was a member of the New Prague Czech Singers and sewing clubs, and volunteered at Mala Strana. Marcy loved to bake, do needle work and play cards.

She is survived by children Richard (Patti Ann) Witt, Lakeville, Shirley Kohout, New Prague, Helen (Jack) McGovern, Hermantown, and Karen Witt, Las Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on November 25, 1990; son-in-law Martin Kohout; her parents; and siblings Robert Svobodny and Stanley Svobodny. Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m., at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague, with Rev. Kevin Clinton officiating.

Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Cemetery in New Prague. Pallbearers were grandsons Tom Kohout, Jeff Flicek, John McGovern, Alex Witt, Mitchell Witt and Joe Witt. Honorary pallbearers were granddaughters Deb Gillard, Amanda McGovern and Dionne Witt.

Visitation was held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Bruzek Funeral Home.
