Marking 10 years in New Prague

By Patrick Fisher

Wednesday, Aug. 19, was an anniversary for me. The date marked 10 years since I started working for The New Prague Times.

Ten years of covering various activities in New Prague and the surrounding area has included everything from city council meetings to special events like the dedication ceremony of the new Fire and Ambulance Facility to community celebrations such as Dozinky.

There have been 10 years of changes in the community. The most obvious ones deal with how the city has grown since 1999, when New Prague had one water tower and one set of stoplights. New buildings have gone up, including Raven Stream Elementary School, the New Prague Gymnastics Club and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church's Parish Center. Housing subdivisions have popped up on all sides of the community.

The biggest change has been around Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. When I moved to town, that was one of very few structures on the south east side of New Prague. Now its surrounded by housing, Coborn's grocery store, State Bank of New Prague, New Prague Market Place, McDonald's, ALCO, East Town Plaza and New Prague Commons strip malls, businesses, restaurants and its latest neighbor is Walgreen's. Plus, Holy Trinity also built an addition.

There are also the differences in economics in the last 10 years. The recent economy has made more of us appreciate more of what we do have. Family, friends, having a place to live, being able to meet the bills and put a meal on the table have become more important than having the latest electronic gadgets.

I have also had some changes in my life. Those changes have ranged from trying to be a better person to improving professionally. I like to think I've improved as a writer and a photographer.

Whatever the future holds let's hope it's a good one.
