Mary Angela Malecha, 99

Mary Angela Malecha, 99, died on Friday, March 4, 2005, at the Northfield Care Center.

Mary was born on September 27, 1905, in Le Sueur County to Frank and Mary (Turek) Valek. She attended school at St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in New Prague. Around the age of 15, she moved with her family to Hazelwood.

She married Thomas Malecha on November 16, 1926, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale. They made their home in Eureka Township where they farmed and raised their children. In 1954 they moved to Northfield, where they lived for over 25 years. Tom passed away on December 2, 1976, after which Mary moved to different locations in Northfield. Mary was active in the Women’s Circle at St. Dominic Catholic Church, and was also a longtime member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She was an active volunteer at the Community Action Center, worked at the Laura Baker School for many years and was also a caregiver in her own home for several elderly people over the years. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and sewing and was well known for her many home baked goodies.

Survivors include her children, Leonard (Adeline), Chino Valley, AZ, Marion (Al) Dohmen, Monett, MO, Raphael (Eva), Madison Lake, Theresa (Al) Perry, Northfield, Bernadette, (Al) Whipkey, Northfield; 31 grandchildren, Steve, Roxane, Karen and Susan Malecha, David, Pauline, Mark, Alan and Becky Malecha, Diana, Daniel, Thomas, Anthony, Nicholas, Francis, Luke, Albin, Martin and Christina Dohmen, Norman, Wayne, Ramona and Nathan Malecha, Melanie, Patrick, Paul and Joseph Perry, Mary Lynn, Jeffrey, Jay and Theodore Streitz; 81 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Christina Malecha, Northfield, Helen Boudreau, Rosemount; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; her parents; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Adeline Malecha; granddaughter, Arne Adeline Hanson; brothers, Frank, Charles, Joseph, Louis, Ludwig and Leo; sisters, Rose Havlicek and Lillian Malecha.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Northfield. The Rev. Dennis Dempsey and Rev. Dennis Evenson officiated.

Pallbearers were Daniel and Tony Dohmen, David and Norman Malecha, Paul Perry and Jeffrey Streitz Jr. Honorary casketbearers were Thomas Dohmen, Alan, Mark, Nathan, Steve and Wayne Malecha, Joseph and Patrick Perry, Jay and Ted Streitz.

Interment was in Annunciation Catholic Cemetery at Hazelwood.

Visitation was from 4-8 p.m. on Monday with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield and also at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to the funeral.
