Mary Sloan, age 75

Mary Ann Sloan, age 75, of Green Isle, formerly of New Prague and Montgomery, died peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, September 18, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health System Mankato.

Mary was born on August 28, 1942 in Brookings, South Dakota, to Emil and Blanche (Kirk) Seifert. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield before transferring to Mankato State University, where she completed her bachelor’s degree.

She married William Marten Sloan in 1962 in Brookings. The couple divorced in the 1980’s. Mary worked as a physical therapist for Mala Strana Nursing Home until the late 1980’s, then for a short time as a home health aid before a crushing accident left her unable to work.

Despite that, she remained upbeat and positive throughout her life. She traveled during this time and lived life on her own terms, refusing to let adversity get her down. She particularly loved the cabin and enjoyed coloring and collecting items that she found especially beautiful from nature. Throughout her life she enjoyed arts and crafts and gardening but her greatest joy came from time with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her children, Dan (Gloria) Sloan of Duquette, MN, Peggy (Tom) Jenny of Montgomery, Kate Sloan of Montgomery; 6 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Bill Sloan; special friend, John Verhoeven; infant son, Brian; brother, Kirk Seifert.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Richter Wood Park in rural Montgomery on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 2 – 6 PM.
