Matilda Stangler, 100

Matilda Rebecca Stangler, 100, of Kilkenny, died on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2007, at the Waterville Good Samaritan Center.

Born on September 10, 1906, in Saskatchewan, Canada, she was the daughter of Julius and Julia Thomas. In 1910, she went to live at the orphanage in Owatonna until she went to live with Steve and Alma Pittman in 1916. Matilda married Elmer Stangler Sr. in April 1925. She was a lifelong resident of Kilkenny. She enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers, crocheting, playing piano and toe dancing in her early years. She was a member of St. Canice Catholic Church and the Rosary Society in Kilkenny.

She is survived by four children, Rosemary Mariska of Morristown, Gerald Stangler of New Prague, William Stangler of Montgomery and Jim and Rita Stangler of Kilkenny; one daughter-in-law, LaVonne Stangler of Waterville; 27 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by a half brother Charles and Leona Pittman of Waterville and half sister, Gladys Ahlman of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Elmer Jr.; two grandchildren; and one sister, Etta.

Visitation was held on Friday, Jan. 26, at Prosch-Dennis Funeral Home in Waterville from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 4:30 p.m. rosary, and one hour before services at the church on Saturday.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Canice Catholic Church in Kilkenny, with Rev. Ronald Dahlheimer officiating. Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Kilkenny.
