Free car seat check up on Jan. 16 Parents are welcome to have their car seats checked for correct installation and recalls at a free monthly checkup event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Jan. 16, at the New Prague Chevrolet dealership on Highway 19 east of New Prague. It takes roughly 20 minutes to check each car seat; no appointments are necessary, and walk-ins are always welcome. Grandparents, expectant parents and others who transport children on a regular basis are welcome to attend. Trained Child Passenger Safety Technician volunteers from New Prague Area EMS will check for car seat manufacturer recalls, provide educational handouts, answer questions and offer tips to drivers to ensure correct installation of all child passenger safety restraints. Genealogy 101 to be held Jan. 16 Anyone who wants to learn more about their family history, but doesn't know where to start can register now for Genealogy 101. It will be held at the Scott County Historical Society Saturday, Jan. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon. Noted genealogist Betty Dols will help people discover the clues contained in census schedules, the importance of courthouse, church and naturalization records, how to identify their family ancestral village and online genealogy resources. Women of Rice County on Jan. 19 Susan Garwood, Executive Director of the Rice County Historical Society, will present Women of Rice County: 1850s-1920s at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19. It will be held at the Rice Country Historical Society Museum of History in Faribault. The program will focus on female teachers, artists, business owners, homesteaders and more. Anyone interested in learning more about the women who helped make Rice County what it is today is welcome to this public program. Refreshments will be served after the program. Legion Auxiliary to meet Jan. 19 Unit 45 of the American Legion Auxiliary will hold its next meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan 19, at the Park Ballroom. There will be a lunch prior to the meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the clubroom. Items on the agenda will include the upcoming Quilt Show. Members of the bar committee are Diane Hertaus Pexa, Bernice Honza, Virginia Hoyt and Mary Jirak.

Area Winter Texans will meet Jan. 25 Winter Texans from New Prague, Jordan, Belle Plaine and the surrounding area will hold their annual luncheon on Monday, Jan. 25, at Harold's Country Kitchen, 2111 East Business 83, Donna, Texas. Parkinson support group meets Jan. 26 The Parkinson support group will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the New Prague Library, 400 Main St. E. Care givers, family and friends are encouraged to also attend. The Parkinson support group normally meets the fourth Tuesday of each month, although that is subject to change. Progression course for teens in Lakeville The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Minnesota will hold a free, six session course in Lakeville beginning in February. It is designed to empower young people to take charge of their lives and deal with the issues they are facing in a healthy and effective way. The course helps teens understand how to maintain good mental health; how to recognize signs of stress, anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder; how to help friends, siblings and parents understand what they are going through and different types of treatment options. It will be held on Tuesdays, from February 2 to March 8, 7-9 p.m. at Crystal Lake Education Center, 16250 Ipava Ave., Lakeville. Registration is required.
