Free car seat checkups are Saturday

Free car seat safety checkups will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, Nov. 17, at New Prague Ford Lincoln Mercury, just east of New Prague. The public is invited to spend 20 minutes getting their children's car seats checked for correct installation. These inspections are thorough overviews and give families the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about correct car seat installation.

Lutefisk/meatball dinner is Nov. 17

Tickets are on sale for the fourth annual youth-sponsored lutefisk/meatball dinner at St. Paul's Lutheran Church near Lydia. The fundraising event is set for Saturday, Nov. 17, with seatings at 4:30, 5:30 or 6:45 p.m.

The menu includes traditional lutefisk and meatballs with gravy, along with red cabbage, fruit soup, Scandinavian cookies and homemade lefse.

Alzheimer's support group offered

The Lutheran Home-Belle Plaine and its chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will hold the monthly support group from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, in the conference room at The Lutheran Home-Belle Plaine. The topic of discussion will be Coping with the Holidays.

Separated/divorce support offered

The next session of the area separated/divorce support group will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the lower level of St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague. The group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Individuals of all faiths are welcome. Call Mary, 952-873-6781, for more information.


American Legion Post 45 meets Nov. 20

Charles Borak Post 45, American Legion, New Prague, will hold a regular monthly meeting at the Park Ballroom clubroom at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Nov. 20. Membership dues for 2008 may be paid at the meeting.

Lunch and refreshments will be served after the meeting.


Legion Auxiliary meeting is Nov. 20

The New Prague Unit 45 American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20. There will be a speaker, and the unit's role in the Heroes at Home program will be outlined. Lunch committee members are chair Sally Bauer, Franny Yackley, Janet Busch and Sam Souk Wollin.


HHW facility closed to holiday weekend

The Scott County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility and RE-USE Room will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 24, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The HHW Facility will reopen for normal operation on Wednesday, Nov. 28.  

The Scott County HHW Facility and RE-USE Room are located at 588 Country Trail East (Hwy 282) in Spring Lake Township, just west of the intersection of MN Highways 13 and 282 and County Road 17. The HHW Facility provides an opportunity for Scott County residents to properly manage and dispose of hazardous household chemicals (such as paint, stain, varnish, paint strippers, solvents, pesticides, automotive chemicals, household cleaning chemicals, used fluorescent bulbs, etc.), while the RE-USE Room contains hundreds of available products for you to take home and use for free.

The HHW Facility is normally open from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Saturdays. The RE-USE Room is open on those same days, but it does close 15 minutes earlier than the HHW Facility.


Holy Cross Athletic Assn. fundraiser set

The Holy Cross School Athletic Association will hold its fall athletic breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Sunday, Nov. 25, at Holy Cross Catholic School. A ham and egg breakfast with cinnamon rolls and beverages will be served. There will also be a raffle drawing at 12 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Holy Cross Athletic Association.

Daycare car seat safety class offered

Licensed child care providers who transport children on a regular basis are invited to enroll in the Child Passenger Safety for Child Care Providers class in New Prague.

The next class will be offered Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the meeting room of the New Prague Ambulance Service of New Prague City Hall.

Child care providers are required by law to complete this class every two years, according to state licensing guidelines. The class will be taught by Diane Hrabe, Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician since 1998. She will review different types of car seats, explain seat belt systems and talk about selecting and properly installing the appropriate seat for each child, based on age, weight, height and activity level.

A pre- and post-test will be given. There will also be video presentations on air bags and other safety measures and most importantly, hands-on car seat installation practice at the end of the class.

There is a fee for the three-hour class; space is limited to 20 child care providers. For more information, call 952-758-2530 (home) or 612-703-5522 (cell).
