Czech-Slovak dinner and dance is April 16 Area residents are welcome to Sˇibrˇinky: A traditional Czech-Slovak dinner and dance from 4-10 p.m. on Saturday, April 16. Providing music will be local group the Dale Pexa Band The event will be held at the Sokol Minnesota's C.S.P.S. Hall, 383 Michigan St., St. Paul. There is a cost for the dinner and the dance. For information, call 651-290-0542. (Sˇibrˇinky was traditionally a costume ball--first held in 1865, in Prague). The ethnic dinner from 4- 7:30 p.m., features pork schnitzel with potato salad and pickled beets. Hot dogs and dessert will also be available, along with a cash bar serving wine and Czech beer. People can also enjoy performances by the Sokol children’s and teen dance groups at 5:15 p.m. At 6 p.m. dance to old-time favorites with the Dale Pexa Band. Masks or costumes are highly encouraged, though not required. The lively and colorful St. Paul Czech and Slovak folk dancers will perform at intermission.

Car Seat Safety Checkup on April 16 Parents, grandparents and others who transport children on a regular basis are welcome to have their children's car seats checked for correct installation and recalls at a free monthly checkup event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 16, at the Jeff Belzer's New Prague Chevrolet dealership on Highway 19 east of New Prague. It takes roughly 20 minutes to check each car seat; no appointments are necessary, and walk-ins are always welcome. Trained Child Passenger Safety Technician volunteers from New Prague area EMS will check for car seat manufacturer recalls, provide educational handouts, answer questions and offer tips to drivers to ensure correct installation of all child passenger safety restraints. Legion Auxiliary to meet April 19 Unit 45 of the American Legion Auxiliary will hold its April meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 19. A meal will be held prior to the meeting at 6:30 p.m. Items on the agenda are the results from the Quilt Show and election of officers. The bar committee consists of Diane Lambrecht, Lorraine Simon, Winnie Simon and Charlene Skluzacek.

Rice Co. Historical offers walking tour The Rice County Historical Society (RCHS) is offering a 90th Anniversary Celebration event on the history of the Fleckenstein Brewery. Brian Schmidt will lead a walking tour of the Old Fleck’s Brewery site starting at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23. Tour participants will get a chance to look around these hard to access ruins. Photos of the brewery will be spread throughout the site, and Schmidt will help visitors see how the brewery would have been in its prime. Access to this site is through private property graciously opened to RCHS for this event.

The society is taking reservations for the tour. It will begin near the Shattuck Bell Tower in the NW Corner of the Shattuck-St. Mary’s campus. Enter through the arch, and follow the loop to the left about half way. There will be signs for the RCHS Walking Tour. The tour includes a walk down the bluff to the brewery ruins. Good walking shoes or hiking boots, weather appropriate clothing, bug spray, and a bottle of water are encouraged. There is a small admission fee for nonmembers and it is free for members.
