Michael N. Deutsch, 91

Michael N. Deutsch, 91, of Faribault, died on Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at the Keystone Communities of Faribault.

Michael Norbert Deutsch Jr., the son of Michael Sr. and Mary (Unger) Deutsch, was born on their family farm on October 23, 1914, in New Prague. He attended New Prague High School and graduated with the class of 1933. Following high school he attended the University of Minnesota until 1935. He then worked at Swift and Co. Later he attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1944. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

On July 20, 1943, he married Eleanore Marie Handschuh at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Michael was employed by the Sioux City Department of Health, the Forest Lake School District and the University of Minnesota. Later he worked for a short time at the Veterans Administration Hospital and the Minnesota Department of Health. In 1959 he received his master’s degree from the University of Minnesota as a genetic research scientist. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and Knights of Columbus, Third and Fourth Degrees. Michael was an active volunteer in the Faribault community.

He is survived by a son, Gary (Doreen) Deutsch, Cottage Grove; two grandchildren, Jason Deutsch (fiancee, Lenore Hill), and Daniel Deutsch; two brothers, Justin of New Prague and Robert (Rosline) Deutsch, California; sister, Martha Phillips, Minneapolis; sister-in-law, Jeanette Deutsch, New Prague; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Eleanore, who died on March 17, 1994; brother, Norbert Deutsch.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church at Immaculate Conception in Faribault on Saturday. Rev. Kevin Finnegan officated.

Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery in Montgomery at 1:45 p.m. with military honors conducted by the Rice County Central Veterans Association.

Interment was from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Parker Kohl Funeral Home in Faribault on Friday and on Saturday, one hour prior to the service. Parish prayers were recited on Friday at 5 p.m. with the Knights of Columbus in attendance.
