Michael Sveen, 50

Michael M. Sveen, 50, of Preston, died of cancer Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, at Methodist Hospital in Rochester.

Michael Melvin Sveen was born March 22, 1957, in LaCrosse, WI. He graduated from Stewartville High School in 1975. He then attended radio broadcasting school in Mankato and worked at a station there for five years, under the radio name of Jay Michael Shaw. He moved to Preston, where he had worked at KFIL Radio for the past 25 years as a DJ and program director. On June 7, 1991, he married Julie Ann Wegscheid at the LDS Temple in Denver. Also in 1991, he was elected to the Preston City Council and began working part-time at the LDS church in Rochester as a groundskeeper. Michael was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints Preston branch. He loved music, visiting with people and fishing.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters Joleeta and Katherine, both of Preston; his parents Maynard and Rita (Schneider) Sveen, Elgin; five brothers Matthew (Barb), Elgin, Mark, Fountain, Merle (Karla), Janesville, Morris (Joleen), Plainview and Martin, Rochester; five sisters Mindy Wescott, New Prague, Mara Devereaux, Phoenix, AZ and Mona Sveen, Monica (Craig) Ziebell and Marcia Sveen, all of Elgin; and 26 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister; and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rochester Stake Center, with President Todd Christensen officiating.

Burial was at Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston.
