This is a city with a really rich history.

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said that during the New Prague Rotary’s dinner on Wednesday, April 13. History was central at the event where Mayor Rybak was the featured speaker, as the club was celebrating two anniversaries with the dinner, Rotary International’s centennial and New Prague Rotary’s 60th anniversary.

Among the speakers at the event was New Prague Mayor Craig S. Sindelar who said that the building at the corner of East Main Street and Central Avenue SE, which now houses Bargain Betty’s, has the name Rybak on it. Mayor Rybak’s great-grandfather owned the building and ran a store there.

Rybak said that he has heard many stories about his great-grandfather. One was about how he had special coins that could be used at his store.

Besides Rybak, there were also members of his family at the event, including his mother, Lorraine Mesken, and cousins Julie Nelson, who lives in New Prague, and Elaine (Rybak) Barber, who grew up in New Prague and currently lives in Minnetonka.

Rybak said that New Prague has a downtown that is still active and it should keep it a strong center of the town.
