Minnesota’s precinct caucuses set for Tuesday

Chuck Kajer, Managing Editor

Minnesota will hold precinct caucuses Tuesday, March 7 across the state.

Precinct caucuses are politics at the grassroots level. Each major political party uses the caucus system to choose delegates for county or district conventions. Caucuses are also the first step in choosing candidates for the November election.

Caucuses are local meetings of political parties. Those who attend caucuses select delegates for the party endorsement conventions and discuss issues. They can submit resolutions which would be voted on and, if passed, the resolutions move on to the next level, where they will again be discussed and voted on.

Political parties also elect their local party officers and conduct straw ballots for gubernatorial candidates.

Minnesota’s three major parties, Democratic-Farmer-Labor, Republican and Independence, will all hold their caucuses on Tuesday. Independence party caucuses for Le Sueur County will be held at Le Center High School.

Precinct caucus locations for the DFL and Republican parties can be found in ads in this newspaper, or on the web site for those respective parties. For DFL caucuses, go to http://www.dflcaucuses.org/next. For Republican caucuses, go to http://www.mngop.com/pf/.

In addition, the Constitution Party, which is not one of Minnesota’s major parties, will hold caucuses on Tuesday. The caucuses will be at the New Prague Public Library at 7 p.m. Anyone with questions can call 952-758-2897.
